Dr. Frank Jircik serves patients in many Texas communities, including those who live in or around the Burleson area. The doctor and his staff specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid and endocrine disorders.
The endocrine system is responsible for the production and release of the hormones the body uses to maintain balance or homeostasis. The endocrine system is made up of numerous glands throughout the body including the thyroid, pineal gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, and pituitary. Each gland releases specific hormones that function as catalysts to create certain reactions in the body. Examples of this include the release and use of insulin to regulate blood sugar and the adrenal glands release of adrenaline to provide the body with the energy it needs to function. Both of these glands release their hormones as a response to the thyroid gland releasing the hormones it produces.
Hypothyroidism is characterized by many symptoms that are often associated with other health problems. Weight gain, sluggish metabolism, hair loss, inability to sleep, inability to concentrate, muscle weakness, puffiness in the face and hands, dry skin, constipation, and a slower than normal heart rate are extremely common in hypothyroidism. If the condition is not treated and the symptoms begin to worsen, depression may begin to play a role in the person's health. This can cause a vicious cycle in which the depression will begin to deepen as the other symptoms continue to worsen, allowing the cycle to keep repeating itself.
The results of a hormone imbalance can be felt throughout the body, especially if it is one or more of the hormones that affect the body's metabolism. When the thyroid gland becomes damaged due to an illness or an injury, the resulting fluctuations in hormones can lead to a dramatic gain or loss in weight, energy levels, as well as a person's physical appearance. If a person's reproductive hormones begin to fluctuate, infertility or the ability to carry a child to term may be the result. Hormone imbalances are often treated with hormone replacement therapy, like that which is used to regulate blood sugar levels and counteract the symptoms of menopause.
